I first learned about Oak Park Commons Cohousing (OPCC) when looking for tiny house communities in Illinois. I think I searched ‘alternative communities', and OPCC came up in the results. When reading about the community, I recognized the model as something I had heard about before. Likely, at one of the many sustainably-themed events I produced and hosted at my librarian job in Santa Monica, CA. Upon finding OPCC, I didn’t do much further research as the cohousing concept was already familiar to me. Although I did forward the site URL to a few friends, and asked them, mostly joking, ‘This doesn’t look like a cult, right?’ Truthfully, Oak Park Commons immediately sounded wonderful. I knew I wanted to move to Oak Park upon retirement and, since I had just one friend in the area and no new coworkers to befriend, I loved that I could move somewhere with instant community. Essentially. I had never owned my own place before and was excited about the prospect of moving into a brand new, and green, building. I was also excited that the goals of the community included diversity of members/residents, regular socializing including communal meals, and neighbors supporting one another. All of these factors made me decide pretty quickly that OPCC was right for me. I’ve now lived here for eight months and I’ve not regretted it for a moment. I love Oak Park, my new home, and this community.
